This year’s Antioch College Reunion celebrates the theme Antioch & the Arts, expansively defined to include visual art, music, performance, media, literature, and architecture. A central highlight of the weekend will be the Herndon Gallery’s exhibition, “Generations of Antioch Artists: Alumni and Faculty Past and Present,” showcasing artwork by alumni, current faculty, and former faculty. Opening on Thursday, July 24 and running through Sunday, July 27, the exhibition offers a compelling window into the depth of inquiry and creative response fostered by an Antioch education across generations. Viewers will encounter visions shaped by science, civic discourse, and global aesthetics—hallmarks of Antioch’s legacy.
Featuring work by alumni from the past 60 years and faculty from the 1970s to today, the exhibition presents a wide range of media and stylistic approaches. Artworks have been generously loaned by artists, collectors, and galleries. While not every piece is for sale, the exhibition also serves as a fundraiser for the College, with 50% of proceeds from any sales benefiting Antioch.
Curated by Michael Casselli ’87 (Associate Professor of Sculpture and Installation), Noreen Dean Dresser ’77, and Judith Church ’75, the show is the result of months of outreach to alumni and former faculty. Participants were invited to submit up to three digital works, from which the curators selected pieces that together form a dynamic, diverse, and compelling portrait of Antiochian artistic practice—both past and present. The exhibition challenges viewers to see the world anew through the lens of artists shaped by the Antioch experience.
Media on view includes:
Prints by Emma Amos ’58, a member of the influential Spiral group of Black artists in the 1960s—its youngest and only female member
Ceramics by former faculty member Karen Shirley
Works and personal ephemera from Dennie Eagleson, Alan Jones, Jeanne Phillip, and Tony Conrad
Films and videos by Joe Gibbons, Beth Warshafsky, and Lynn Estomin
Photographs by William Short, Anne Turyn, and Odette Chaves-Mayo
Drawings by Fran Beallor, sculpture by Amani Carille Bolden and Michael Jones, and mixed media work by Cynthia Beth Rubin, among many others
In addition to the exhibition, several participating artists will lead workshops and panel discussions throughout the reunion. Highlights include:
Lynda White, exhibiting her masks and leading a puppet- and mask-making workshop on Thursday; White is currently the Puppet Master for The Lion King on Broadway
William Short, Noreen Dean Dresser, and Michael Casselli, appearing on Saturday’s Message-Centered Art panel, moderated by Dennie Eagleson
Liz Flyntz, who will speak about architecture at Antioch alongside Scott Sanders, Natalie Feinberg, and Tim Noble on Friday
Don’t miss this powerful exhibition! Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, July 24, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM—experience the extraordinary work of Antiochian artists, acquire a piece of art to treasure, and support Antioch College in the process.
