Job Corps & Antioch: Building Pathways Together
I wondered about Antioch’s outreach to Job Corps students. I got this response from Shane Creepingbear ‘08, Dean of Admissions.
Over the past month, Antioch College has deepened its partnership with Job Corps, creating urgently needed pathways for displaced students amid uncertainty about the program’s future. Though recent court rulings have temporarily extended Job Corps operations, many students had already begun seeking alternatives—and Antioch stepped up.
The campus-wide action to mobilize around this was impressive. The community came together through academic and student affairs, admission, financial aid, the kitchens, the office of the president, and facilities
This summer Antioch welcomed 11 students to join our campus community, with 3–7 more expected for Fall Term.
Admissions held a minimum of 31 individual information sessions with students from 4 Job Corps centers, while staff visited facilities in Dayton (OH), Woodland (MD), Potomac (DC), Phoenix (AZ), and San Diego (CA).
This summer, students are taking Emily Samborsky’s computer literacy course (a JA block course), working on campus, and building connections. You might even meet them at Reunion!
Thank You, Antiochians!
When we called on alumni to help welcome these students, you answered—extraordinarily. Thanks to your generosity during our June fundraising effort, we’ve secured critical support for housing, meals, and academic resources to ensure these students thrive this summer. Your swift action embodies Antioch’s spirit of community and solidarity.
While some Job Corps centers paused outreach pending legal clarity, our commitment to these partnerships remains strong. To stay involved, share our Job Corps landing page https://antiochcollege.edu/job-corps-and-antioch-college/ and/or join our Admission/Alumni session in McGregor 9-10 a.m. at the Reunion on Saturday, July 26th, to learn how you can help us to make connections and share the amazing opportunities Antioch has to offer.
Corretta King, Associate Dean of Admissions, has been working with the Job Corps students. She shared her experience.
It has been an absolute privilege to engage with these Job Corps students and learn about both their tragedies and triumphs. I am incredibly proud of each one of them and deeply impressed by their remarkable ability to overcome obstacles with tenacity and strength. I feel truly honored to represent Antioch College and to help provide opportunities these students may not have realized were available to them. Witnessing their drive and motivation has been nothing short of inspiring. Being part of their journey has been profoundly rewarding, and I look forward to celebrating their achievements as they walk across the stage on graduation day.
